Morbidity profile and outcome of low-birth-weight neonates in NICU of a tertiary care hospital

Background: Birth weight has been accepted as the most important reliable index of health status community and is an indicator neonatal morbidity mortality. Aims objectives were to determine incidence, clinical epidemiological profile low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates in NICU tertiary care settings assess distribution various morbidities, mortalities outcome based on neonates.Methods: This hospital-based prospective study was conducted for one year at a centre, Ahmedabad. All with birth <2.5 kg admitted included study. Data gestational age weight, congenital anomalies, morbidities along their outcomes collected analysed.Results: Total admissions over period Ahmedabad 4275 which 64.63% LBW. The maximum number among LBW new-borns (72.47%) having ranging from 1500-2499 gm. sex ratio 1.46:1, indicating males (59.39%) more than females (40.61%) stay babies <1 kg, 1 1.499 1.5 8 10 days. main cause mortality 1-1.499 prematurity.Conclusions: prevalence accounted admission. Common observed perinatal asphyxia, RDS/HMD, jaundice. early that 46.9% discharged while 39.3%.
